Properties of Dihydrogen

 Properties of dihydrogen

Physical properties :

  1. Dihydrogen is colorless, tasteless and odorless gas.
  2. It burns with a pale blue flame.
  3. It is a nonpolar water insoluble gas,
  4. lighter than air.
Chemical properties :

i. Reaction with metals :

Dihydrogen react with all reactive metal  including alkali metals, calcium, barium at high temperature

ii. Reaction with dioxygen :

Dihydrogen react with Dioxygen to form water in presence of catalyst. This Exothermic reaction

iii. Reaction with halogen :

Hydrogen  react with halogen to  form hydrogen  halides

(X= F, Cl, Br, I )

iv. Reducing nature of Dihydrogen :

    a) Dihydrogen reduces oxides & ions of metals those are less reactive than iron. to the                                 corresponding  metals

    b) Reaction with unsaturated organic compounds

The hydrogenation of unsaturated organic compounds such as oil using nickel catalyst gives saturated organic compounds such as solid fat (Vanaspati Ghee).

Uses of Dihydrogen :

i. Largest use of dihydrogen is in production of ammonia.

ii. Dihydrogen is used in formation of Vanaspati ghee by catalytic hydrogenation of oils.

iii. Liquid dihydrogen is used as a rocket fuel.

iv. Dihydrogen is used in preparation of important organic compounds like methanol in bulk quantity.

v. Dihydrogen is used for preparation of hydrogen chloride (HCl) and metal hydride
